The department of plastic surgery of the Hospital in České Budějovice is the only workplace of plastic surgery in south Bohemia. It provides the services of plastic surgery for all patients from the Region of South Bohemia.
It especially focuses on the issues of congenital defects, particularly congenital defects of the fingers, toes, auricle, eyelids, congenital skin tumours and vascular malformations. Other areas of activity include the surgical treatment of skin tumours, malignant and benign, mainly basaliomas, squamous cell carcinomas, and melanomas. In close cooperation with the departments of traumatology, dental surgery, ENT, ophthalmology, and orthopaedics, the department provides the treatment of extensive defects following the removal of advanced tumours. An integral part of the department’s work consists in treating acute hand injuries, particularly when associated with tissue losses, injuries to tendons, nerves, follow-up/subsequent or delayed hand surgery after injuries that occurred earlier, reconstruction of fingers, and the surgical treatment of diseases affecting the hands. The department provides replantation services for the South-Bohemian and West-Bohemian regions. It participates in the treatment of second- and third-degree burns affecting up to 15% of the body surface. It provides the treatment of extensive tissue defects using methods of microsurgical transfer. Female patients who have undergone removal of a breast because of a tumour are treated with breast reconstruction. The department also provides surgical treatment of bedsores, of chronic osteomyelitis, and skin defects. Another area of interest is aesthetic surgery – physicians of the department offer a whole range of aesthetic surgery procedures, i.e. surgery of the auricles, eyelids, nose, lips, the front, plastic procedures on the face and on the neck, breast reduction, tightening and augmentation, liposuction, tummy plastic surgery, plastic surgery of the inside of the thighs and arms, and correction of scars.
The volume of surgery accomplished at the department is 1,300-1,500 procedures annually. The department of plastic surgery in České Budějovice applies the principle of one-day surgery in indicated cases.
