The laboratory of bacteriology performs the diagnostics of bacterial infections. It provides consultations regarding the collection of biological samples and the results of investigations, and recommends rational therapies in accordance with the clinical condition of the patient. It carries out the diagnostics, therapy, and prevention of severe infectious complications in critically ill patients in the intensive care departments of the hospital. The Antibiotic Centre that is part of the laboratory of bacteriology conducts continuous monitoring of antibiotic resistance. It is included in the nationwide monitoring of resistance to antibiotics that is organized by the National Reference Laboratory for Antibiotics. Another part of the laboratory is the workplace for laboratory diagnostics of tuberculosis and other mycobacterioses covering the whole South-Bohemia Region. In cooperation with hygienists and epidemiologists, the laboratory takes part in the monitoring and prevention of infectious complications in patients hospitalised in the hospital. It ensures the control of the sterility of preparations produced by the transfusion department of the hospital. The laboratory participates in the education of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
