The department of medical genetics is an outpatient workplace for the catchment area of the South-Bohemia Region. It is located on the ground floor of the building of the Central Laboratories of the Hospital České Budějovice a.s.
Medical genetics is a multi-disciplinary specialty that is one of the newest and most rapidly developing branches of the medical science. The ever deepening knowledge of the human genome results in the growing number of conditions that have been clearly shown to be influenced by genetic factors, and cooperation with a genetics workplace is becoming a necessity in practically all medical specialties.
The most profound characteristic of the specialty of medical genetics is its preventative orientation. It provides genetics counselling and preventative care to families affected by the occurrence of congenital developmental defects and hereditary disorders, to pregnant women with increased risk of congenital defects in the foetus, to pairs with fertility disturbances, patients with certain types of tumours, patients with suspected congenital thrombophilia and their relatives, and others. Laboratory prenatal and postnatal investigations (chromosomal investigations, DNA analyses) are performed by the Laboratory of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Hospital České Budějovice a.s. In cooperation with the Laboratory of Clinical Chemistry, Hospital České Budějovice, a.s., the Department of Medical Genetics carries out the evaluation of results of maternal biochemistry screening in pregnant women.
In cooperation with the Department of Gynaecology of the Hospital České Budějovice, a.s., we ensure the prenatal diagnostics of pregnant women from the South-Bohemia Region – collection of amniotic fluid and foetal ultrasound investigations. The department of medical genetics is interconnected in this area with the specialized workplaces of prenatal diagnostics in the Czech Republic (chorionic villus sampling, sampling of cells from umbilical blood, prenatal echocardiography).
For the Centres of Assisted Reproduction, the department of medical genetics conducts genetic investigations of married couples, including the investigation of spermiogram.
The department closely cooperates with a number of specialized genetics workplaces in the Czech Republic.
