Head: MUDr. Václav Chmelík

Basic information:

The department of infectious diseases treats patients with infections of all age groups. Children are treated by specialised staff in the paediatric ward of the department, where school education is offered as well. Adult patients are treated in two wards of the department. Hospitalised patients are separated (isolated) in their rooms so that mutual transmission of diseases is avoided.
The regimen of provided care is specifically adjusted to prevent the transmission of the causative agents. Infections with high transmission rate are treated in two rooms equipped with a special air conditioning system with air flow filtration and special nursing regimen.
The intensive care unit of the department treats patients with serious course of infectious disease that puts the vital functions of the patient at risk.
The department also admits people who have returned from various parts of the world with exotic infections. Other services offered in a specialized consultation surgery include investigation prior to travel to tropical and subtropical destinations, immunization and prophylaxis of malaria. Patients who have recovered from an infection are monitored in specialized rooms for those who have had nervous system infections, infectious jaundice and other conditions.
The department has also established an AIDS Centre, providing its services, as one of only seven similar workplaces in the Czech Republic, to people infected with HIV and those with AIDS from the entire South-Bohemia Region.
The department also treats inpatients with septic (inflammatory) complications after orthopaedic diseases and surgery for total endoprostheses, and also patients with septic complications after neurosurgical procedures. These patients are treated in beds in the ICU, or standard wards of the department, which provide these patients the full care of a department of internal diseases (nutrition, antibiotic therapy, infusions, post-surgery treatment, treatment of accompanying internal diseases, physiotherapy). The surgery, other specialist procedures and change of bandages is performed by orthopaedists and neurosurgeons.
