The transfusion dept. prepares and produces transfusion preparations, plasma for other blood derivatives is also produced here, and it conducts laboratory diagnostics.
The preparation of transfusions and plasma as raw materials for subsequent processing includes, as a starting step, obtaining blood and its components from blood donors and laboratory investigation of the quality of the obtained blood and further processing for individual types of preparations, their storage and distribution to various health care facilities. The production of transfusion preparations is subject to rather rigid requirements known as Good Manufacturing Practice.
The laboratory diagnostics carried out in the transfusion dept. includes investigations related to the safety of transfusions, i.e. tests of compatibility of the donor with the recipient, investigation of antibodies in pregnant women, and investigation of selected diseases. The transfusion dept. also conducts selected investigations of potential donors who are included in the Czech National Registry of Bone Marrow Donors.
The firm Transfuzní a.s. ensures the collection of blood from donors from the districts of Č. Budějovice, Č. Krumlov, and Prachatice at the donors ward located in Schneider Street. Blood from the donors of the district of Strakonice is obtained by a mobile unit according to a predetermined sampling plan at the sampling centre of the Hospital Strakonice. In collecting blood from donors, the transfusion dept. cooperates closely with the regional associations of the Czech Red Cross.
The transfusion dept. supplies the basic preparations to the hospitals in Č. Budějovice, Č. Krumlov, Prachatice, and Strakonice, and provides the more specialized preparations to other hospitals in the Region, as well.
It also conducts advanced laboratory diagnostics for the health care facilities in the Region.
